IRL streaming gear from a phone in your hand to a backpack: what each tier really needs

Research guide. Facts are paraphrased from the manufacturer pages listed under Sources and were checked on the date shown there. Nothing here is a hands-on test. No prices, no affiliate links.

IRL streaming means going live away from a desk, with the stream sent over mobile data. Every IRL kit covers four jobs: camera, microphone, power, and a way onto the internet. The tiers differ in how much of each job you buy as hardware and how much you rent as a service.

For each tier, hardware you buy once is listed separately from recurring items. We do not state monthly amounts; check the provider. Nothing here promises an uninterrupted stream: coverage, carrier policy and app behaviour change by location and over time, and no manufacturer page we opened guarantees continuous service.

First, the platform rules that shape every tier

Twitch. The mobile app starts an IRL or games stream from the + button, which opens the Create menu; Go Live is only available in Creator Mode. Twitch lists iOS 16.4 or greater and Android 8.0 or greater. Its Creator Camp page gives the steps as: install the app, tap +, permit audio and camera, update stream information, tap Stream.

YouTube. The mobile live help page requires at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live streaming restrictions in the last 90 days, and up to 24 hours after enabling before the first stream. Channels under 1,000 subscribers may get a limited mobile audience with archives private by default. Devices: Android 8.0 or later, iOS 8 or later.

Kick. Kick documents a dedicated KICK – Go Live app for iOS 18.0 or later and Android 8.0 or later, open to any Kick account, with camera and microphone permissions required. You can read chat in the app but not reply. A separate Kick article documents third-party apps (Streamlabs Mobile, Prism Live Studio, Larix Broadcaster, Moblin) using a custom RTMP URL and the dashboard stream key. RTMP is the protocol most apps and encoders use to push video to a platform.

Tier 1: phone-only budget kit

This tier streams from the phone's own camera using the platform app or a third-party app. The phone is camera, encoder and modem at once, which is why power is the first problem you hit.

One-time hardware

  • Your phone. Check it meets the OS version the platform lists above.
  • A clip-on microphone. Two routes:
  • DJI Mic Mini (1 TX + 1 RX, or 2 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case combos). DJI's FAQ says the transmitter can pair to a phone directly over Bluetooth, and that livestream audio that way "depends on the compatibility of the livestreaming app and the mobile phone operating system". The DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver is documented for USB-C phones; Lightning iPhones need the separately sold DJI Mic Series Mobile Receiver Adapter (USB-C to Lightning). DJI lists 400 m range in an open, interference-free environment, "for reference only", and approx. 11.5 hours transmitter runtime with noise cancellation off at close range.
  • A wired lavalier. Cheaper, but we found no manufacturer page documenting a specific wired lav against current streaming apps, so support is not verified. Confirm the mic is documented for your phone's port and test with your streaming app before going out.
  • A grip or cage. A cage adds a handle and cold shoe mounts (the small bracket slot mics and lights slide into). SmallRig's Universal Quick Release Mobile Phone Cage MC4 (4299) page states MagSafe use for iPhone in static scenarios and compatibility with 1/4"-20 screw accessories. Ulanzi's Lino Dual Handle Metal Smartphone Rig 2792 page lists a maximum phone width of 8.2 cm, length 13 to 16.5 cm, and 245 g. Width ranges and cold shoe counts are not stated on every manufacturer page; check your phone's dimensions against the listing.
  • A small power bank with documented pass-through charging. Pass-through means the bank charges itself from a wall charger while also charging your phone. Anker's page for the Anker Laptop Power Bank (25K, 165W, Built-In and Retractable Cables), model A1695, says it supports pass-through but "requires a charger rated at 20W or higher, and the input power must exceed the output power"; Anker's support article adds that output is limited below input. At 90 Wh and 595 g per Anker's spec sheet it is large for a budget kit; whichever bank you choose, only count on pass-through if the manufacturer page states it.

Recurring items

  • Carrier data plan. You stream through your phone's own data. Check whether your plan limits video or hotspot use.

Documented limits of this tier

Kick's app does not let you reply to chat. YouTube limits mobile audiences under 1,000 subscribers. Bluetooth mic audio depends on app and OS per DJI. And one phone battery is doing camera, encoding and data at once.

Tier 2: mid kit with a dedicated camera, wireless mic and hotspot

Here the phone stops doing every job: a dedicated camera handles video, a wireless system handles audio, and a separate hotspot carries the data.

One-time hardware

  • Camera, option A: DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Spec page: 1-inch CMOS sensor, 179 g, 166 minute runtime at 25 °C, 1080p/24fps, Wi-Fi and screen off, "for reference only"; 0° to 40 °C; "UVC & Livestream" at 1080p. DJI's livestream guide lists it as streaming through the DJI Mimo app (V1.2.20 or later) to Facebook, YouTube or RTMP at 480p to 1080p. The FAQ says it links directly to two DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini transmitters.
  • Camera, option B: DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. Spec page: 1950 mAh, 146 g, -20° to 45 °C, waterproof to 20 m without a case, 240 minutes at 1080p/24fps with RockSteady on, Wi-Fi and screens off, at 25 °C. DJI's FAQ says demanding use "can result in a noticeable increase in temperature". Same Mimo livestream options as the Pocket 3, and DJI's Mic Mini FAQ confirms two transmitters link directly.
  • Camera, option C: GoPro HERO13 Black. Spec page: 1900 mAh Enduro battery, waterproof to 33 ft, "more than 2.5 hours of continuous recording at 1080p30 or over 1.5 hours at 4K30 and 5.3K30", measured at 25 °C with 0.6 m/s wind, wireless and HyperSmooth on, screens on, GPS and voice control off. GoPro's support article covers Live Stream on HERO7 Black and newer through the Quik app to a GoPro Subscription link, Facebook, YouTube, Twitch or any RTMP/RTMPS URL. The camera must join Wi-Fi directly, so outdoors it rides on your phone's hotspot; GoPro suggests 720p there and estimates up to 2 GB of data per hour.
  • Wireless mic with a phone receiver. DJI Mic 2: the FAQ says it works with phones via USB-C/Lightning or direct Bluetooth, with Bluetooth limited to one transmitter and no noise cancelling or internal recording. Spec page: 250 m range (FCC) measured outdoors without obstruction, 6 hours per transmitter with the receiver on a 3.5 mm camera cable. RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3): RØDE states up to 260 m line of sight, 32-bit float on-board recording, and that it plugs into an iPhone or Android phone; RØDE Central needs iOS 14 or Android 9.0 or later. Battery runtime and box contents are not stated on the RØDE page we checked.
  • Gimbal. DJI Osmo Mobile 7P or Osmo Mobile 7: spec page lists phones of 170 to 300 g and 67 to 84 mm wide, approx. 10 hours runtime balanced and stationary with no accessories (approx. 5 hours with tracking, 4 with tracking and fill light at maximum). The 7P's Multifunctional Module receives DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini transmitters per the FAQ; charging the phone from the gimbal shortens runtime. DJI's guide states Osmo Mobile models do not themselves stream; the phone app does.
  • Larger power bank. The Anker A1695 above is one documented pass-through example at 90 Wh, listed by Anker as flight-approved.
  • Hotspot. NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 (MR6150): the product page lists it as unlocked and certified for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon (US only), needing a 5G compatible SIM, with one 1 Gbps Ethernet port and up to 13 hours of battery, footnoted that actual life "will vary depending on network and environmental conditions, devices connected" and more.

Recurring items

  • Carrier data plan for the phone, plus a second SIM or plan for the hotspot.
  • Optional GoPro Subscription for the GoPro.com stream link (limited to two hours per GoPro's article).

What this tier still cannot do

A single hotspot is a single carrier. If that network drops, the stream drops. The premium tier reduces that risk; it does not remove it.

Tier 3: premium with a bonded cellular encoder

Bonding means splitting the stream across several connections at once (multiple cellular modems, Wi-Fi, Ethernet) so a weak link slows the stream rather than ending it. It needs a hardware encoder and, in every system we checked, a paid service.

One-time hardware

  • LiveU Solo PRO (HDMI or SDI/HDMI model). LiveU's product page describes up to six IP links: four external 4G/5G modems plus Wi-Fi and LAN, with cables for two modems in the box and Y-cables sold separately or bundled in the Solo Belt Pack and Solo PRO Connect kits. LiveU's support article still reads "currently supports up to two external modems", so confirm before buying. Up to 4K, HEVC optional. Battery runtime and weight are not stated on the pages we opened.
  • BELABOX. Software that turns documented single-board computers (Orange Pi 5 Plus, Radxa Rock 5A/5B/5B+, Jetson Nano) into an H.265 encoder with modem bonding and dynamic bitrate control. You assemble board, modems and battery yourself; no complete kit is documented.
  • Teradek VidiU Go. Teradek's page documents bonding over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, up to two Teradek Node modems and phones as hotspots, HDMI and SDI inputs, H.264 and HEVC, up to 1080p60. The same page marks it discontinued, so it is a used-market option only.
  • A camera with HDMI output, since these encoders take HDMI or SDI, not a phone signal.

Recurring items

  • Bonding service. LiveU says its LRT subscription "gives you access to the Solo bonding technology", with annual and monthly options. BELABOX Cloud (relays to OBS, cloud remotes) is a perk for recurring sponsors. Teradek bonding runs through its Core service. Fees: see each provider.
  • Data plans and SIMs for each modem. LiveU's Solo PRO Connect bundles modems and region-based data plans activated through the Solo Portal, listing the US, Canada, EU, Norway, Switzerland and the UK plus a Traveler Package for over 100 countries, without naming carriers or stating fair-use terms.
  • A relay or OBS computer for BELABOX, since the documented workflow relays to OBS.

Choosing your tier

Start at tier 1 if you have never streamed outdoors. Move to tier 2 when audio and battery, not connectivity, are the complaints. Go to tier 3 only when you regularly stream where one carrier is not enough, because its service fees continue whether you stream or not.
